Testimonials

“Kathy Terry is a genuine “Old School” flutist having studied with Maurice Sharp of the Cleveland Orchestra, who’s pedigree and stature molded many of America’s finest flutists in the last half century. There is a certain musicality and tonal expression from flutists of that era. During that period, American flute playing was rising to the highest international levels of expertise and expression. Hand crafted silver flutes from the mid 20th century produced a particularly full sound with many overtones. Many of today’s modern flutists play on flutes that bear more resemblance in cost and workmanship to the likes of high end cars such as Porsche, Audi and BMW. Not only do the flutes contain precious metals of gold and platinum, but, they are engineered with such precision that playing them requires far less finesse in producing a gorgeous sound and perfect articulation.

Kathy plays ever so beautifully and artistically on her Circa 1960’s Haynes Flute. I had the rare opportunity to play 2nd flute alongside her in the Tampabay Symphony for many years. Her tour as principal flute was truly inspiring to orchestra members as well as concert goers. She plays with a gorgeous, sweet tone and flawlessly executes technical passages like a knife gliding through butter.” – Jean Lagor

“Kathy Terry is a well-known flutist in the Tampa Bay Area. I have known her for many years as a musician colleague when we played with the Tampa Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBS). She was our principal flutist at the TBS for ten years. As the principal clarinetist of the TBS, performing challenging music such as Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade “ with Kathy was a truly memorable and rewarding musical experience. Her beautiful, singing and expressive tone and intuitive musicianship are hallmarks of her musical artistry. She also has a wealth of knowledge, a wonderful personality, very articulate ,and it is always easy and a pleasure to work with her. I highly recommend Kathy as a musical artist and a music teacher.” – Bienvenido G. Yangco, M.D.,M.P.H.,M.M.A.(Performance)

“It was during the time that I was returning to flute playing after playing very little since I was a young person that I took lessons from Kathy. She worked with me to change old habits in order to improve my tone, encouraged me to play with more feeling and taught me strategies for working on difficult passages.  (Not that I have mastered all of these!)  I appreciated her knowledge  not only of the flute but of music in general and her patient encouraging method of teaching.  I am glad a friend recommended Kathy to me.” – Marty Snapp

“I had the privilege of being a member of a choir directed by Kathy. Until that time, my musical experience had been limited to playing an instrument and not vocal endeavors. Kathy was great! Her musical knowledge and expertise are undeniable as well as are her interpersonal skills with her students.” – Marsha Suckling

I can heartily recommend Kathy Terry as an excellent flute teacher.  A few years after retiring, and a lifetime of playing the piano, I decided to learn to play the flute.  For almost a year I took lessons at a music studio, but then I was so fortunate that Kathy agreed to take me on as a beginning student.  During my first lesson, she lay down on the floor to show me how I should be breathing, and I knew I had a good teacher.

Kathy took me back to basics, helping me improve my posture, hand positions, and embouchure.  She worked hard to help me improve my tone, and as I progressed, she enthusiastically cheered me on with positive comments.  My weakness in improvisation probably disappointed Kathy, but she didn’t scold me for it!

I have told Kathy that she has my deepest gratitude for her support and excellent teaching.  Without her, I probably would have given up playing the flute. Instead I am still playing, in a small wind ensemble, and 2nd flute in a band for older adults.

In addition to her teaching methods, Kathy presented an inspiring example of excellence in her performances with the Tampa Bay Orchestra and in other ensembles.” – JoAnne Wilson

About me

I teach music lessons in a refreshingly light and airy home, my own!  Piano, flute, and vocal coaching comes easily to me after a lifetime involved in singing, accompanying, and playing the flute in many settings: on stage at Palladium Theater with St. Pete Opera, in the pit at Ruth Eckard Hall, playing principal flute with Tampa Bay Symphony at Mahaffey and Straz Theaters,  playing chamber music at the Dali Museum and playing hymns and directing choirs in various churches.  Come learn and play with me!

My mission

My aim is to respond to each child’s (and adult’s) natural gifts in an intuitive and knowledge based way to facilitate progress at each lesson, sending students happily on their way, equipped to teach themselves during the week and return for the next step on their musical journey.
